Welcome to the 7th World Congress on Recovery, Recycling and Re-integration (R’05) in Beijing, China. On behalf of the organizing committee, I would like to thank you all participants from different fields, members of the Scientific Committee and all sponsors for their joint efforts to make this congress successful.
The 3R World Congress series originated from the Rio Earth Summit, 1992, at which the need for a global forum to discuss sustainable management issues was proposed. The 1st 3R congress was held in Geneva, Switzerland in 1993, followed by three successive ones also in Geneva, 1995, 1997 and 1999. In 2000, the fifth one moved to Toronto, Canada, and the sixth one was back to Geneva in 2002. To make this series of 3R congress more international and to respond to the great attention of the Chinese government to recycling economy, the 7th congress comes to Beijing as a cooperation between Chinese Academy of Sciences and Swiss Academy of Engineering under the support of State Environmental Protection Administration of China.
In the 21st century, we face a great challenge for sustainable development, which calls for cooperation and interaction between different scientific and technological fields, and needs joint promotion from governments, societies and publics. After six successive congresses of this series and other series of congresses held in this aspect, we believe that recycling economy has received sufficient social attention not only from the scientific community but also from the administrative level.
The problems we must resolve now are how to realize the recycling economy, and to what extent we could realize it with a reasonable balance between economy and ecology. Without response to these problems, the public will be confused with the concept of recycling economy, and we could be blamed for saying too much but doing little. With such a consideration, this conference, compared with previous ones, pays more attention to enabling technology at different levels such as chemistry, process and system, indicated by the arrangement of plenary lectures. We also try to orient the conference to focus on some important fields by arranging selected workshops. I believe that it is the time for the recycling economy to progress from a dream to reality through solution of scientific problems.
R’05 aims at establishing an international and innovative dialogue between scientists, practitioners and decision-makers involved in industrial, political, academic, social and environmental sectors. Over 600 abstracts were received from 53 different countries, 6 plenary lectures were invited to present achievements and future needs in various areas covered by the congress. In each session, keynote lectures, oral presentations and poster presentations are arranged. In addition, several forums and workshops are arranged for in-depth discussions on some specific topics.
Thank you again for participation in R’05 and efforts made during the whole organizing process. I wish you all the best in your stay in Beijing and wish the concept of recycling economy a great reality!
